Everybody that wants to stay fit and trim can run. Running is not
only meant for professional athletes; it is meant for everybody
irrespective of sex, age (as long as you can still run), and race.
Running
is a form of exercise that helps us to lose weight and tune up our body
muscles. Other health benefits of running include the following:
-It helps to lower our blood pressure
-It helps to make our hearts stronger
-It helps to lower our cholesterol level
-It increases our metabolic rate
-It helps us to build up our self esteem
However, for you to get the best out of running, you should make use of the following tips:
Tip 1-Make use of good running shoes
One
of the most essential investments that you must make when you want to
run is to buy a good pair of running shoes. This is necessary because if
you make use of good high quality running shoes, you would reduce the
trauma caused by the level of force that running subjects your legs and
feet to. High quality running shoes are designed specially to cushion
the effects of these harmful forces on the feet and the general body.
Don't run using your regular tennis shoes or your regular sneakers.
Furthermore,
when you want to buy your running shoes, you should go to a store that
specialises in the sale of running gears as the staffs of such stores
are usually very knowledgeable about these types of shoes and they will
be of great help to you when you want to choose the right running shoes
that will suit you.
Note however that it is advisable that you
replace your running shoes once you have covered more than 500 miles of
distance with them, as their ability to cushion the effects of the
frictional force caused by running tends to diminish after that have
been used to cover over 500 miles.
Tip 2-Don't be in a rush
Start
gradually and do not rush yourself. It is advisable that you see your
doctor before you start running; you should also measure your blood
pressure, body mass index (BMI), cholesterol level, and blood sugar
levels before you start running.
After your doctor gives you the clear, you can put on your running
shoes and start out by initially combining jogging with walking; you can
alternate walking for five minutes with jogging for two minutes. After
some time, you should increase your running time till you are able to
jog for at least 20 minutes at a time. It is only when your body can
withstand jogging for 20 minutes at a time that you should endeavour to
increase your jogging distance.
However,
if you have been living a very sedentary life prior to the start of
your running exercises, you should start off by engaging in only
walking; from ordinary walking you then progress to brisk walking before
you then add some jogging to your walking. Also, if you were a grossly
inactive overweight person before the onset of running, you would have
to progress slowly so that you do not injure yourself as your previously
inactive musculoskeletal system will not adapt to your new levels of
activity quickly.
